Why are the people on here so picky about spelling?

if you understand what someone is typing then does it really matter. for example LOL doesn't spell any real word, but I never see anyone correcting that because they know what it means, how is that any different for using a misspelled version of a word cuz its shorter. I swear 30% of the people on here are so anal I honestly think that they would point out the misspellings in a suicide note
