How do i hunt coyotes?

You can kill coyotes with a .22 long rifle but should really use something more powerful. There are many .22 caliber high power rifles around and if you want something that will do the trick very nicely and will also be great for deer and antelope, something like the .243 would be nice. Much will depend on how much open space you have because the more powerful the rifle the greater the potential for stray shots traveling across fences into your neighbor's cow herd. That makes for a pissed off neighbor. If there is no danger of shots traveling too far and hitting something uncomfortable then the .22/250 would definitely be my choice. Wind is very important...so much so that many times a coyote will circle the sound of a call trying to check on the scent. So check the wind and expect the critters to come at you upwind. If they get downwind they'll just mosey off to some other food source. Best time would be early morning or late evening. Can you shoot coyotes at night? If so, a good spotlight and calling will work great. Be sure to aim the spot above ground level, you'll get the reflection of their eyes. If you sweep the center beam around at ground level you'll "burn" them and they will turn tail. Also, some hunters put a red lens over the light, which helps in not alerting the animals. An added attraction could be using bait but check the game laws about night hunting and using bait. Many times these laws don't apply to varmints but coyotes may be seasonal and protected. Also, if you're considering their fur, it will be better in the winter than the summer. If calling you can get shots well under 100 yards. If you're using a scope-sighted rifle this can be challenging finding the animal in the scope. Scent, your scent, is important because if they smell you they're off and running.
